Roger Haviland

ROGER HAVILAND


Was born in Londonderry, Ireland and came to Burns Township in 1838. He was a shoemaker. His brother Bernard and he took up land from the government, 240 acres each on what is now Byron Road. His wife, the former Catherine Ferry, kept diaries from 1840 until she died in 1912 and she tells what life was like when she first came to Byron in 1840. Roger was a successful farmer and well respected member of the community. He became involved in the banking business in Corunna and was President of the First National Bank there. He also was President of the Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Shiawassee County. A country school was built on his land called the Haviland School. The Haviland’s had no children of their own but raised 5 adopted and foster children. The Haviland home still stands today.

   

KITTIE HAVILAND SCHAD



Kittie Haviland Schad, Catherine Haviland and one of the twins, either Alice or Ella. Alice married Robert Cummin and Ella became the wife of Frank Sheldon. Kittie married William Schad.

 

BERNARD HAVILAND


Son of John Haviland and a nephew of Roger and Roger’s brother Bernard. He came here from Scotland in 1856 and married Louisa Cowan who was a niece of Catherine, Roger’s wife. He inherited the land of his Uncle Bernard and built a house on it, which stands yet today. He was the father of 3 children, Roger B., Robert and Lillie.
