LUTHER KANOUSE

He was the son of Jacob and Mabel Kanouse. Jacob came to Byron vicinity in 1836 and in 1840 he married Mabel Drake. It is interesting to note that she was born in the Township of Burns in Allegany County, NY in 1821. It was never stated in the minute books of our Burns Township where our name came from, but one wonders and we know that other settlers came from Burns Township in Allegany County NY. Mabel was the daughter of Gideon and Maria Pope Drake who came to Burns in 1838. Luther was one of four children born to Jacob and Mabel. Luther distinguished himself in the Civil War. He was wounded in one of the many battles he fought with Co. D. Sixth Michigan Cavalry. He was commissioned a First Lieutenant and was discharged in 1865 at Fort Leavenworth after making a tour through the west fighting Indians. An old history says that “with others who had helped to save the flag of our country, he participated in the Grand Review at Washington and then came home, having received pay for a service of three years and three months”. He engaged in farming after the war and was a respected and active member of the community. He married Vienka Gaston and five children were born to them of which only two survived, Nellie and Birney.
