McKINNEY FAMILY

William Lyon McKinney was born in 1834 in Redford Township, Wayne County, Michigan. His parents were Alexander and Margaret McKinney. He was the first child born after the family came to America in 1832. In 1856, William came to Burns Township and in 1860, his father bought 80 acres of land for him in Section 2 and he built a small cabin and began clearing land. This was part of what later was known as the Irish neighborhood and his land was adjacent to the Haviland’s and on Cole Road. His wife was Catharon Hickey from Bennington Township. Their children were Della M., Delbert , William and Rose. By 1870, 80 more acres had been added to the farm and a new larger home near the northeast corner of the property was built. William was active in community affairs and well known in the area. He died in 1921 and his wife in 1914. William (called Bert) married Myrtle Lewis and later Nancy Brewer. Della married Ralph Tubbs and lived in Howell. Rose married Joe Harrington, son of Almon Harrington of Byron area. Delbert died at age three.
