WELLMAN FAMILY Richard
Wellman came to Byron in 1836. He was the son of Aaron and Lucy Wellman
who both died in 1851 and 1858 respectively. Richard married Roxanna
Smedley and they built the house that still stands on the northeast
corner of Byron and Britton roads. Three children were born to them,
Kittie, Asenath and Frank. Kittie died at the age of 22 years. The
Wellman’s were active in the early Methodist Church in Byron, joining in
1852. Asenath left this area. Frank never married and lived with his
parents on the homestead. His mother died in 1896 and his father soon
followed the mother in 1897. It is thought that Frank died of
melancholia in 1902 at the age of 50. |
