The First Physician

The first physician to locate in Byron was Dr. Abner Sears in 1838 but he soon
died and was followed by Dr. Henry Rowland in 1841. Doctor’s Guthrie, Sleeth, Austin, Webster, Fox Caldwell, Stevens, Knapp, Seymour, Murphy, Howard, Brannock, Harper, Ruggles, Orr, Robert Fox and Hambly have been practicing physicians in the village since that time. With the passing of Dr. Fox the community was left without a medical doctor and the larger part of his practice went to Dr. Covert of Gaines. Around 1937-38 an Osteopath, Dr. Gilroy located on the second floor of the old Fritz Building (just south of the present bank). He was followed by Dr. Holloway who located first in the old Benton Building then moved to the first floor of the Fritz Building at that time owned by George Eddy. About two years later he purchased the large home of Herman Meier and made it into a hospital known as the Lawrence Hospital which he operated for a few years, then sold out and moved away.
