CAPTAIN D.G. ROYCE
From the Shiawassee American August 1, 1863
The funeral of Captain D.G. Royce of the Sixth
Michigan Cavalry, who was killed at the
Battle of Falling Waters,
was largely attended at Byron in this county, on Sunday last, July
26th. Reverend Mr. Campbell of Goodrich, (formerly pastor of the
Presbyterian Church at Byron) officiating. The services were
attended by at least three thousand people from the surrounding
country, with a number of Lodges of I.O.O.F. of which body Captain
Royce was an honored and influential member. This large attendance
of the people from the surrounding country tells in language than we
can employ, the deep reverence and affection in which the memory of
the deceased is held by all who knew him. In his death, the country
lost an active patriot – the country one of its most excellent
citizens – society, a valued and intelligent member – and the
domestic hearth, a husband and father, whose loss is made
irreparable this side the tomb. In short, Captain D.G. Royce was
“God’s Nobleman”. He died in defense of his country, the posterity,
while they admire his virtues, will drop the tear of gratitude upon
his grave for all coming time.
