Fire Officer of the Year

Chief Rich Musall

At the Shiawassee County Firefighters Association meeting recently Bums Township Fire Chief Rick Musall was surprised and honored when he was presented a Plaque naming him "Fire Officer of the Year" Musall was nominated by the Burns Township Board. He has done much to upgrade and make the Bums Township a great one, was their report. More firemen have joined the department many young men that are interested in the training in the Department.

Rick and his wife Laura have three children, Jason 10, Brandon 7, Dylan 4 Last year he bought a house in town and is in the process of putting back like it use to be when know as a historical place. He is very interested in the history of his home area and the town, and township. Rick moved to Byron in 1976. Graduated from Byron high school 1987. He worked for Chadwell Excavating and the Apple Farm before becoming a Byron Village employee October 1996.
In 1988 he started in the fire department on probation, then became a regular fireman, He has been secretary, Lt. Captain, Assistant Chief and has been chief 3 years. He is a probation Instructor now, at firemen school. Several times he has visited the firemen memorial at Roscommon. "le there he honors Fire Chief Roger Wenk who died at a fire in the Byron Area. He has been active in the cub scouts, tee ball and anything his boys are into.
Rick helped with the planning and the making of the Fire Dept Water ball Court in the Byron Sesquicentennial Park. The Firemen use it often in the summer and always draw a crowd to watch. For relaxation the Family enjoy going to Sleepy Hollow Park for a few days at a time, He enjoys being with his family.
At the meeting of the Shiawassee County Firefighters Association Rick was surprised to see so many of Burns Fire Dept present but thought it was because meetings had gotten more interesting through the last few years. What he did not see present was his wife Laura, she, had stayed hidden until award
	After leaving the meeting all the Firemen and Laura went to the Bums Township hall where the Board was waiting to honor him with a special cake and coffee. Rick is two-year term trustee on the Shiawassee County Firefighters Association Board.
