Byron: A Medical History
In Brief

The first physician to locate in Byron was Dr. Abner Sears in 1838, but he soon died and was followed by Dr. Henry Rowland in 1841.

Some of the doctors that have practiced medicine since then include: Guthrie, Sleeth, Austin, Webster, Fox Caldwell, Stevens, Knapp, Seymour, Murphy, Howard, Brannock, Harper, Ruggles, Orr, Robert Fox and Hambly.

With the passing of Dr. Fox, the community was left without a medical doctor and the larger part of his practice went to Dr. Covert of Gaines. Around 1937-38, Dr. Gilroy, an Osteopath, located a practice on the second floor of the old Fritz Building (just south of the bank). He was followed by Dr. Holloway, who located first in the old Benton Building then moved to the first floor of the Fritz Building . About two years later he purchased the large home of Herman Meier and made it into a hospital known as the “Lawrence Hospital,” which he operated for a few years. Eventually he sold out and moved away.
